God of Carnage
“The masks (and the gloves) come off in this witty dissection of bourgeois values.”
The story begins with two sets of parents discussing a scuffle their children got into on the playground. Discussing the proper way to discipline the children, the couples exchange pleasantries accompanied by clichéd expressions. As the meeting progresses, diplomacy is tossed out the window, the rum flows, tensions emerge, and it becomes more of an argument than a discussion. Apparently one child hit another in the mouth with a stick, but will the parents ever agree on the correct way to teach their children to behave properly? The gloves come off and opinions slowly exposed in this play.
Winner of three Tony Awards, this show premiered in London and is making waves in the U.S. It won awards for Best Play, Best Leading Actress (Marcia Gay Harden), and Best Direction (Matthew Warchus). This show is a must-see due to its unforgettable translation by Christopher Hampton, direction by Matthew Warchus, and pure writing of Yasmina Reza. It’s playing at the Bernard Jacobs Theatre and remember, one should never “underestimate the pleasure of watching really good actors behaving terribly” (The New York Times).
