Turandot Will Turn You On
Another Puccini masterpiece comes to life as Turandot hits the stage. Originally performed in Milan, Italy, in 1926, Turandot is set in Peking, during legendary times and takes you through a whirlwind of emotions.
As with any opera, knowing the plot is most important before entering the opera house. Here are some details to get you acquainted. The Princess Turandot must choose a husband, but has specific instructions for her adorning suitors: they must answer three riddles. If they fail to answer correctly, the penalty is death. Prince Calaf, although he conceals his identity, competes for the hand of Turandot and answers all the riddles that he is faced with. Turandot is not happy about that he has passed the test, so Prince Calaf (still unnamed at this point) allows her to avoid the marriage if she can discover his true name. With her guards hard at work, they look for clues all over Peking that would lead them to the name of the Prince.
During their search, they come across a young slave, named Liú, who claims to know Calaf’s true self. In fact, Liú knows Calaf so well because she is in love with him. There is a stunning suicide, an angry confrontation, and a major breach of personal space, all to reveal the identity of Prince Calaf. The sacrifices that are made and Calaf’s trust become clear to Turandot and she announces to her kingdom that the name of the Unknown Prince is Love.
