When the Count’s valet (Figaro) and the Countess’s maid (Susanna) are about to be married, Figaro discovers that the Count is planning on reviving an old custom: the signorial right to go to bed with any of his servant’s brides on their wedding night. Figaro is determined to stop the Count before it’s too late. Just when Figaro thinks he can stop the Count, he is faced with another barrier in the road. Marcellina and the lawyers prove that Figaro entered himself into a marriage contract in exchange for a loan. The Count wants to add Susanna to his list of conquests, the Countess is feeling neglected by the Count because she’s aging, and Marcellina wants to marry Figaro, only to find out later that Figaro is actually her and Bartolo’s son. It is a classic stage performance of miscommunication, multiple love connections, and of course threats and drama. Possibly one of the most poignant points in the performance is the Countess’s aria at the beginning of Act II, where she expresses her sadness at her inability to keep the Count’s attention.
