Wicked: the other side of Oz

Originally a novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked highlights the untold stories from the Wizard of Oz, showing the unforeseen relationship between good and bad. Opposing viewpoints, the Wizard’s corrupt government, and of course a love interest are all involved. Although the plot is not exactly congruent with the movie The Wizard of Oz, there are many references made that are enjoyable for the audience. The witches’ relationship develops without Dorothy or Toto and the witches themselves transform through what can be recognized as their “earlier” years. The Gershwin theatre is a larger than life venue for this larger than life theme, combining the exploration of the rainbow’s darker side with the fun and entertaining land of Oz.
Since 2003, this show has been breaking box office records and intriguing audiences of all ages. The cavernous stage is filled from top to bottom with intricate detail and special effects, including a dragon and flying monkeys, not to mention the colorful and vivid costumes along with superb lighting. The musical does not include the classic songs like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” but it does highlight the sisterhood of the two witches, tolerance for animals and people who look different, and the value of truth over hypocrisy.
