Hair on Broadway

The setting is New York’s Greenwich Village, in the late 1960s, the perfect scene for an “American tribal love-rock musical”. If you’re looking for Hair tickets, look no further. Hair emphasizes the hippie counter-culture that headlines the sexual revolution and protests the Vietnam War. Hair is a celebration of life and freedom, as well as a passionate cry for change.

Using profane lyrics, showing illegal drug use, and an irreverence for the American flag, Hair tells the story of quite literally, a “tribe” of hippies. They are politically active and living a bohemian lifestyle in the “Age of Aquarius.” The tribe of characters includes two friends, Claude and Berger, who are both infatuated with the politically involved and motivated woman, Sheila. Sheila is too absorbed in politics to notice their love. The play covers the tribe’s protests, recreational activities, relationship difficulties, and even shows some skin.

Galt MacDermot wrote the music for Hair. Because of his Cape Town University background and his history of studying music of the Bantu, Hair has a lot of African rhythms incorporated, noticeable in such numbers as “What a Piece of Work is Man” and “Ain’t Got No Grass.” MacDermot said when he thinks of rock & roll to him that translates to funk and that’s the style and sound that is evident in Hair, in such songs as “Colored Spade” and “Walking in Space.”

Hair has been on Broadway and Off-Broadway in multiple productions and this revival will not disappoint. It opened again in its Broadway revival in March of 2009 and has been pleasing audiences of all ages (but not too young because of the racy content). Don’t miss your chance to witness this play and a portion of history. Get a seat for this shaggy, curly, twisted, wonderful world that is Hair.
